You have finally got those breast implants you have always dreamed about, only to wake up one morning and discover that one of your breasts seems flatter, as though your implant has deflated. Chances are that it probably has. Breast implants deflate when the saline solution or the silicone gel leaks out of it’s surrounding packaging.

Saline leaks usually occur quite quickly and are readily noticeable within a few hours or days of when the leak begins. Silicone gel however, often leaks extremely slowly and is often contained withing the scar tissue surrounding the implant for some time before leaking to other parts of the body. In the case of a silicone gel leak it could take months before any change is noticeable.

What Causes The Saline or Silicone to leak?

While the most common cause of leakage for both saline and silicone implants is simply age there are many other causes as well. The longer you have your implants the more likely they are to leak, this is actually expected as implants only have a certain life span before they need to be replaced. However, there are cases where implants leak withen days or even a few months of the implant being installed and there may be several causes for this.

Implants can leak if there is an unsealed or damaged valve or if there is either too little or two much saline put into the implant before it is placed in the breast pocket. A leak or a rupture can also be caused by excess pressure on the breast due to a mammogram or an accident. Or you may simply have a faulty implant that ruptures.

Effects of Leaking or Ruptured Implants

In cases, involving saline implants the leakage usually is noticeable very quickly. Your breast looks different and feels pretty much like a balloon that has lost some of it’s air. Since the saline used in implants is similar to what the body contains your body will normally absorb the saline solution harmlessly.

However, due to the amount of saline released into the body at once some people may suffer from headaches and nausea. There have been cases where the saline solution has contained contaminents, that have resulted in serious infections and other health problems. Which is why you should seek medical care to have the implant removed as soon as possible after it has begun to deflate.

Silicone Implants usually leak at an extremely slow rate and the gel will remain withing the scar tissue that has built up around the implant for some time meaning it could take months before the leak becomes noticeable. Often the first signs of something amiss is tenderness or pain in the breast area. MRI are usually needed to discover if a leak has indeed occurred. If the leak goes unnoticed for a long period of time the silicone gel can move into the lymph nodes or lungs where it may be impossible to remove.

Few tests have been done to determine exactly what health issues may be caused by leaking silicone gel. However, women who have had silicone implants leak have reported higher incidents of fibromyalgia and other painful diseases. As with the saline implant the best course of action is to have the implant removed as soon as the leak becomes noticeable.

In both cases surgery will be needed to remove the damaged implant and to install a new one. Many doctors recommend the removal of both implants especially if you have had your implants for some time as implants do eventually wear out. This lowers the chance for additional surgery later on if the other implant deflates or begins to leak.

At this time you can have the same size implant as before request a smaller one or decide to not have another implant at all. Recovery from surgery is usually relatively fast barring any complications.

While breast implants are usually safe, it is always wise to follow medical advise and if you have any indication that your implant may be deflating to seek prompt medical care. The sooner the leaking implant is removed the better it is for your health regardless of the type of implant you have.

Many women who consider breast implantation, picture themselves full busted and beautiful. However, if you are seriously considering breast implant surgery you are going to have to be realistic what you can expect from those implants. The simple truth is that it simply may not be possible for you to increase your bust size as much as you want. Small framed women simply may not have the capacity for large breasts. Getting breasts that are too large for your frame can result in a variety of health problems such as back pain, and painful grooves in your shoulders from your bra straps digging in, in an effort to hold up the heavier breasts. In addition, too large sized breasts can also interfere with you continuing some activities you have always enjoyed.

Too large implants can also cause harm to your psychological health. Breasts that are too large for your frame not only look fake, but they make it difficult to find clothes that fit and can result in a person always feeling conspicuous and having less self esteem than they did when they had small breasts.

Luckily, these problems rarely occur for the simple reason that most implant surgeons are ultimate professionals. They know that business depends on your looking and feeling good and are dedicated to accomplishing that goal. They simply will not insert implants in a size so large that they might jeopardize your health. In fact, you are required to answer questions to assure the surgeon that you are realistic about what implants can and can’t do for you.

Many implant surgeons encourage you to try temporary solutions that are roughly the size and shape of the implant that is right for you so you will get some idea of what the implant looks and feels like.

In most cases, being able to visualize what the implant will look like before actually having the surgery helps the prospective patient to know if implant surgery is right for her. In many cases, even a single cup increase does more than you can imagine to enhance your looks, make your clothes fit better and increase your self esteem. It doesn’t take long for a small frame woman to realize that a B cup may look as good on her as a C or D cup looks on a larger framed woman.

If you truly disagree with the size of the implant your surgeon is recommending, you can always get a second opinion. However, if the second implant surgeon recommends the same size implant, then it is wise to listen to that opinion. While it may be possible to find a less scrupulous surgeon who will give you exactly the size implant you want, you will eventually regret this decision. After all, you are getting a breast implant to help you feel and look better not to suffer from both physical and emotional pain.

Always keep in mind that your implant surgeon has seen almost every shape and size of woman in his practice and has learned from experience and through education how to determine what is a reasonable size implant for your frame and amount of breast tissue. If you have chosen your surgeon with care, you can trust in his judgment knowing that he is concerned not only about how you will look but also about your continuing good health. His reputation depends on it and his business depends on your satisfaction.
