Breast Implant Complications

Just like any other surgery, there are certain complications and side-effects involved with breast augmentation as well. The ‘normal’ risks are included but so are other specifications which should not be ignored. In case you have been prudent and chosen your surgeon carefully, these risks will definitely be reduced but not omitted altogether.

Even if you take all the precautions and keep all possibilities in mind, fact is that breast implant complications do exist.

It is of common knowledge that the filling in saline implants is put in only after the surgery. Therefore, there are chances that one breast may be bigger than the other. Also, in case due attention is not given to the placement, your breasts will look lopsided and the only way to get rid of this problem of asymmetry is to undergo surgery again.

There are two options to choose from when you decide to get breast implants. Either you can go for saline filled or silicone. That being said, after you recover from the surgery, you may realize that your breast size is either too small or too big than what you wanted. If you have select saline filled implants, this problem can be fixed. All the surgeon will have to do is fill more saline solution. On the other hand, if you have silicone implants, the doctor will have to replace them and you will have to go under the knife again.

If you get silicone implants, you will have to go back to the surgeon for maintenance because they tend to leak. These are called silent ruptures and the solution will leak out very slowly. In this case, you will realize that your breasts are getting hard and this will be very painful. The reason being that scar tissues will develop around the area of the implant.

Breast stitches

The list of breast implant complications also includes numbness around the nipple due to nerve damage. Sometimes this is temporary but in many cases, it can be permanent as well and the feeling may never return.

The surgeon will have to make incisions around the nipple and at the base of your breast in order to slide in the implant. These areas are chosen because the possibility of scarring is reduced. However, there are always exceptions and you may notice the development of unsightly scars after a few months.

After the surgery, it is very important to clean the incision area so as to avoid infections. It has already been mentioned that in case of certain breast implant complications, you may have to undergo surgery again. This is called revision surgery. Even though the surgeon can make the incision in the same area, the nature and duration of the procedure will be the same.

A common breast implant complication is a negative reaction to anesthesia. This is why it is important that patients brief the surgeons about their medical history so as to avoid unnecessary complications.
