As media images influence people’s perception of attractiveness to change over time, people in the general population will sometimes change their expectations when it comes to plastic surgery. For example, lips that might have seemed “overinflated” a decade ago are acceptable and even desirable today. The same is true with breast implants. Women are seeking larger implants as public perception of breast size changes. Rather than simply achieve a full busted look, many women want breast implants that are exaggerated in size, even if they are obviously “fake” looking.

A lot of women who decide they want very large implants have already had breast implants and were unsatisfied with the results. Though 500 cc breast implants are considered to be on the large end of “normal,” there are women who want implants of 625 to 1000 cc. For comparison purposes, 1000 cc is the same as one liter volume. Because of the increa se in women wanting extra large breast implants, there are starting to be plastic surgeons, particularly in leading plastic surgery capitals like Los Angeles, who specialize in these implants.
For women wanting large breast implants, it is even more important that they seek out surgeons who have experience in performing this type of surgery. There are some considerations with larger implants the surgeon needs to take into account, and the operation is riskier in terms of attractiveness of the final results. A woman should also take into account her frame and overall figure. Women who are taller and larger framed have less trouble supporting a larger breast implant than a shorter, more petite woman. In fact, women with a smaller frame may actually experience loss of their actual breast gland tissue due to pressure from an oversized implant. This can complicate matters if she later wants breast implant removal.
Women who have narrow chests but who want very large breasts do better with what are called “high profile implants.” These are smaller in diameter, but project farther than standard implants. For an average sized woman who wants DD sized breasts, it usually takes implants of 600 to 700 cc. Larger implants are available, but most manufacturers cap sizes at 1200 cc. This size breast implants requires longer incisions and can usually only be placed through an incision site under the breast fold in order to allow the surgeon to have the most control over the position and placement of the implants.
Women who want to “make a statement” by having enormous breast implants need to find an implant surgeon who has performed the procedure with larger implants. The surgeon should have pictures available of patients who have chosen extra large implants so that prospective patients can get an idea of the changes such implants make to the profile and figure. The surg eon should also be able to inform the patient of potential risks and complications that are more likely with larger breast implants so that she can judge for herself whether the benefits outweigh the risks.
As for the benefits of choosing large breast implants, size DD and larger, women who have had the surgery are pleased that they have had a more dramatic change in their body, that their breasts are more noticeable and look better in certain styles of clothing. The also feel like they haven’t had to go through the regret of having chosen smaller implants and having to have surgery again to go larger.
Like any cosmetic surgery procedure, there are many drawbacks and potential complications associated with large breast implants. For example, a “rippling” effect, noticeable through the skin, is more likely, as is capsular contracture, which is a condition where scar tissue forms around the implant and contracts, maki ng the breast change shape to some degree, and harden. There is also some evidence that large breast implants are more likely to rupture. There is also the possibility of compromised athletic performance in women who play sports. And just as there are women who have regret about choosing breast implants that they later considered too small, there are women who regret choosing breast implants that they later consider too large.
Before deciding upon having large breast implants, a woman must consider several things. One major consideration is that while it’s relatively easy to increase the size of the breast, it is not so easy to go back. Many women who have wanted to scale down their breast size later in life find that the excess skin from their larger breasts has to be removed to produce a good shape, and this can result in scars. Additionally, large breast implants can cause what is known as pressure atrophy, where the implant crushes the patient’s natural breast tissue, leaving her with very little natural breast tissue once she has breast implant removal. Additionally, the weight of large implants over the years can cause the entire breast to sag, weakening the skin’s ability to support the breast.

The human anatomy can only go so far in accommodating things implanted in it. Once a person’s skin is pushed beyond the limits of what it was designed to hold, the result can be permanent damage or deformity. There are several top plastic surgeons who will not do the surgery to implant very large breast implants if they don’t believe the person’s frame and skin can handle such a large implant. Unfortunately, there are plenty of other surgeons who are willing to do these riskier operations, and if they don’t have the proper experience in dealing with large breast implants, the probability of complications increases dramatically.
The choice of larger breast implants usually works out best in women who have had pregnancies, or who have lost weight, or who otherwise have a more relaxed skin texture who may be able to go with large breast implants with little trouble. However, if a surgeon believes that the patient’s body cannot accept such a large size, he or she may suggest that the patient go with smaller implants at first, then wait until the skin adjusts to these before removing them and replacing them with larger implants.

There may be patients wanting large breast implants who make the decision to have the implants “sub-mammary” rather than “sub-muscular.” This means that the implants are on top of the chest wall muscles rather than underneath. The risk with this type of implant placement includes visible rippling and a heightened risk of capsular contraction. Another option is having adjustable implants. These saline and silicone implants can be gradually increased in size over a six month period to allow the skin time to stretch. One common refrain among surgeons is that women who want to have very large implants should find a surgeon who has extensive experience in using the larger implants.
There is also the psychological aspect to consider. A woman’s perception of her body will almost certainly change over the decades. Just as many people regret the tattoo they got at a young age, there are women who at 40 regret the very large breast implants they got in their 20s. There are also societal changes in what people find to be fashionable in terms of body types. The shape that is most coveted right now may look dated and out of style in a decade or two. A woman who is seriously considering having very large breast implants may want to reconsider and temper her decision by what may be necessary later on if the implants have to be replaced due to rupture or capsular contraction, or if she changes her mind about how she wants her body to appear.
